Children and Families Bill SEN Provisions: Second Reading Briefing
February 2013
Sense welcomes the overall aims of the Children and Families Bill SEN provisions which seek to introduce integrated assessment and provision for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
However, at the Second Reading of the Bill, we are urging Parliamentarians to seek a number of commitments and assurances from the Under Parliamentary Secretary of State for Education, Edward Timpson MP, in order to ensure that the Bill meets the needs of deafblind children and their families.
Children and Families event (11 March 2013)
On the 11th March, Sense held an event for deafblind children and their families in Westminster. The event was the first in a series of activities designed to encourage families to share their personal experiences with decision-makers and to call for changes on the issues that affect them.
During the event, families heard about the Government’s planned reforms to the system of Special Educational Needs (SEN) which are currently being enacted through the Children and Families Bill. Families were then invited to share their views about the proposed changes, based upon their experiences of the system so far.
The following paper summarises the views shared by families throughout the day. A summary of key points can be found at the start of each section.
