Support for professionals working with deafblind children

Two women demonstrating a tactile object Many professionals will only come across deafblind children very occasionally and may be uncertain how best to support their multi-sensory impaired needs.

Our Children’s Specialist Services team works in partnership with professionals, building on their skills and knowledge to help them develop a holistic view of the children and young people they are working with.

Our experience of supporting deafblind children, young people, and their families has been developed over many years.

This means we have wide experience of the impact of deafblindness and multi-sensory impairment. We also have comprehensive knowledge of the most appropriate strategies and interventions to support them.

Expertise

Because we work with deafblind children and young people all the time, we have developed expertise that we share in national and international forums.

We also use this expertise to provide training and consultancy services across health, education, and social care.

One part of our training and consultancy work is involvement in the assessment process. We are also currently piloting a resource for health professionals aimed at helping them to support deafblind and MSI children in hospitals.

Additionally, we have information and advice for teaching professionals along with general advice on working with deafblind children.

Information for families about the Sense services which are provided charitably and about the effects of deafblindness on children and young people is available on the website.

We also run a range of family events and groups for children and young people which the families you are working with may find of interest.

Other Sense services

We also offer a range of other services for children, young people and their families. These include:

Intervenors: Sense provides one-to-one support to a congenitally deafblind child or adult. They enable the individual to participate in the world around them, support their communication and encourage independence

Holidays: We organise around 25 summer holidays for deafblind children and adults each year

Support into adulthood: Sense provides a range of residential and supported housing options. We also offer resource centres around the UK where people are able to choose from a wide range of simulating activities and programmes

Branches and membership: To help families to come together for mutual support, share information and to keep up with the latest developments, Sense supports local branches and offers a membership scheme
