Star-studded launch of the 2011 Drumathon

29 June 2011

One of the highlights of Deafblind Awareness Week 2011 was the star-studded launch of the Drumathon.

Sense's patron, HRH The Princess Royal was in attendance and made an impassioned speech about the importance of music in the lives of deafblind people.

Celebrity drummers and percussionists Dame Evelyn Glennie, David Rowntree from Blur, Britian's Got Talent's Kieran Gaffney and the cast of STOMP all grabbed a stick to make a noise for Sense in London's King Cross.

The aim of the Drumathon is to raise awareness of the challenges deafblind children face with communication and to show that music is a powerful tool in enabling them to express themselves.

Kieran Gaffney and David Rowntree teamed up for an impromptu jamming session, STOMP led a fun and noisy drumming workshop and Dame Evelyn Glennie worked with individual deafblind children to help them appreciate rhythms and vibrations.

The Drumathon launched a national event which took place on Friday 1 July 2011 in over 200 primary schools across the UK
