Sense responds to new research into changes to Disability Living Allowance
09 January 2012
A new report into the changes to Disability Living Allowance (DLA) has been published by disability campaigners.
The Responsible Reform report analyses the responses to the Government's original consultation on DLA reform. The responses were gathered following a Freedom of Information request.
The report shows the high level of opposition to some of the key changes that the Government would like to make when DLA is replaced by Personal Independence Payment from 2013.
Sue Brown, Head of Public Policy, said:
"The report clearly demonstrates the overwhelming opposition to a number of proposals related to the reform of Disability Living Allowance.
"The Government listened to the opposition to the removal of the mobility component from people living in residential care and reversed this decision.
"The Mayor of London’s response was just one example from the vast opposition to the extension of the qualifying period to six months; we hope that the Government can think again on this key issues to ensure that Personal Independence Payment continues the essential role that DLA currently plays in supporting disabled people to lead independent lives."
