Ridgewalk trekkers put their best foot forward
03 July 2012
The third annual Sense Ridgewalk trek through Oxfordshire took place on 30 June and 1 July 2012. Despite scattered showers and chilling winds our trekkers’ enthusiasm and determination made for another fantastic event.
Following the success of previous years, the event has grown from strength to strength. This year was no exception as experienced Ridgewalkers and teams new to the challenge tested their endurance whilst tackling the terrain of the Ridgeway National Trail with a total of 360 participants.
Our Platinum walkers began their 52 mile challenge on Saturday afternoon in Watlington, Oxfordshire. After trekking throughout the night and across four marshland checkpoints and a county divide, reached the finishing line at Barbury Castle in Wiltshire on Sunday.
Those taking part on the similarly daunting Gold route of 26 miles set off under the cover of night at 12am on Sunday morning, and aimed to reach the same destination before 12pm.
Many congratulations go to our winning team from the security company G4S who, considering the damp conditions, reached the finishing line in a fantastic time.
After receiving their medals, a well deserved breakfast was the choice of celebration for many of the teams.
Our thanks go out to all of the support teams and walkers who have excelled themselves this year with their fundraising efforts. Donations will still be coming in over the next few weeks and many teams have already raised well over their £1,950 target.
The event raised in excess of £250,000 in the first two years and, with many teams taking part for the first time this year, that total looks set to keep increasing in the future.
Further thanks go to our corporate sponsor Iron Mountain and to Global Adventure Challenges for their huge support in helping to make the event such a success.
