RidgeWalk: Frequently Asked Questions

How do we enter a Team?

Places are limited and go on a first come first served basis so book your team's place as soon as you can! You will need to fill in the registration form along with the registration fee. Once your form is received, The RidgeWalk Team will write to you sending you further information on what to expect from this awesome event!

Is the RidgeWalk for us?

ABSOLUTELY!! The RidgeWalk is suitable for people of all ages (minimum 18 years old). The one thing everyone will have in common is a great sense of adventure and the desire to help Sense - the UK’s leading charity for deafblind children and adults. Around 75 teams from all over the region and beyond will be taking part.

The route is fully way-marked, and maps are given to each team – although navigational and map reading skills are useful, they are not necessary.

How fit do we need to be?

Both routes have been designed to be very challenging, but achievable by anyone as long as you and your team train before hand. Remember, you will be trekking for 52 miles over 24 hours, or 26 miles in 12 hours depending on which route you have chosen to tackle! The fitter you are the more you will enjoy this challenge.

Trekking training tips can be found on this website to help point you in the right direction. We are not going to lie, The RidgeWalk is a tough endurance challenge, but with the support of your Team and us, anyone can do it!

Can we enter a Team, even if we do not represent a company?

YES! Many other teams will be taking part – football clubs, social groups and even family and friends.

Can we arrive on Friday 21 June 2013?

Of course! The RidgeWalk base camp for both routes will be open from Friday night onwards; we will be encouraging as many teams as possible to join us on the Friday. The will be plenty of room to camp, (at a minimal cost per plot) so feel free to bring your tents or caravans! The exact location of both the start lines will be issued in your information pack sent following registration.

Please make sure you collect your registration pack so we know you’ve arrived.

Do we need specialist kit?

We will supply you with a kit list of what you need once you register to take part. Apart from some broken in trekking boots and maybe some trekking poles, you do not need any specialist kit.

Food matters…

Food and drink is available at both base camps the evening before The RidgeWalk and will be heavily subsidised. In addition, throughout The RidgeWalk there will be a variety of check points & refreshment stops, all offering complimentary fruit, high energy snack bars, water, tea, coffee etc. We can cater for all dietary requirements so long as we know in advance – just fill in the appropriate section on your Teams medical questionnaire that we will send once registered.

What sort of back up is there?

There will be a strong support team with professional, Global Adventure Challenges Leaders bringing up the rear of the group, as well as marshalled checkpoints. There will be medics travelling around the route in support vehicles, and we’ll have a First Aid point located at various check points en route a well as the finish points.

What happens if we get tired, or need to pull out?

There will be regular rest stops where each team can drink and eat some snacks – there is no problem if you need to take more rest stops. Guides will be bringing up the rear of the group ensuring no-one is left alone. If you need to pull out, either your support team can come and pick you up, or in case of an emergency we will have support vehicles available at all times should they be required.

What do the support crew members need to do?

The support crew are there to help, encourage and motivate you throughout the trek. Most importantly they should be available to come and meet you at the various designated check points if required, this may be for you to have a break, a change of clothes or a much needed motivational push!
