Dancing on Wheels: An ice experience for deafblind Truro teens
31 January 2011
There was cool fun and frolics at the Eden Project over the weekend when a group of Truro youngsters took to the ice in their wheelchairs.
Six Cornwall teenagers with visual and other sensory impairments took over the ice rink at the Eden Project to showcase their skating prowess accompanied by a group of volunteers who guided them across the ice.
The young people, all aged between 11 and 19, are part of the Truro-based ‘Get Out There’ (GOT) Group, managed by Sense, the national deafblind charity. The group aims to give its members opportunities to “get out there” and have fun like other teenagers. In the past, group members have taken part in activities as diverse as surfing, sailing and pizza-making.
Simon Allison, from Sense, project coordinator for the GOT Group, said: "Visiting the Eden Project was a really fantastic sensory experience. The ice skating was exhilarating for the young people and volunteers alike – move over Torvill and Dean, you’ve got competition!"
