12-year-old wins award for inspirational behaviour
07 December 2012
A young pupil from Kent has been given an award for her remarkable commitment to support the care of her deafblind brother. Danni Moffet won the runner up prize in the “Exceptional Carer” category at the Kent Community Foundation’s Ward and Partners Children's Awards.
Danni, a year 7 pupil from Highsted Grammar School, Sittingbourne, loves horseriding and dancing. She also devotes much of her time looking after her younger brother. A lively 8-year-old-boy, David - like many deafblind children - has additional disabilities, including language problems and learning difficulties.
Danni and David take part in social events organised by the Kent branch of Sense, which provides mutual support and networking opportunities for deafblind people and their families.
Sue Turner, Chair of the branch said: “His sister’s support is of great value to David’s physical and emotional wellbeing. The two of them spend hours playing together and have developed their own way to communicate, making it possible for David to connect with the world. Despite her age, Danni shows huge amounts of empathy for her little brother and has perfect understanding of his needs. Her behaviour is truly inspirational for the families of deafblind children facing similar challenges”.
If you’re inspired by Danni’s story and want to make a difference to the lives of deafblind people in your local community the Kent branch of Sense is looking for volunteers. To get involved contact Sue Turner at 01622 831345 or sgturner@talktalk.net.
